18605628Japan: No Publisher C1860. First edition / original artwork. Two lovely pieces very similar to and likely copies of details from Itaya's monumental banner of the night procession which was created in 1860. The original banner showed a large number of the demons. These pieces each show one detail from this spectacular night. Original water colour and gouache on silk covered washi Japanese card with an applied gilt border and the silk speckled kozo washi mulberry paper surround. In the first painting two oni 鬼 Japanese supernatural demons are in the parade with a long banner or streamer on a pole. In the second image four female yÅkai or demons are engaged in a cosmetic / grooming ritual. They are busy applying makeup holding a mirror and attending to one another. The red lipstick in particular implies that these are demons. Both images are humorous in style much as Halloween takes the fear out of All Hallow's Eve. The hyakki yagyo 百鬼夜行 is the parade in which one hundred demons or yokai march through the streets at certain times of the year. As the parade passed those foolish enough to peer out of their windows risked being killed or abducted. Each painting has a silk painted panel of 16cm x 17cm on a backing of 22cm x 27cm. The original 6 metre long panel is currently hanging in the "Art Gallery of New South Wales." Another detail from the panel in an almost identical style and border is held at the Pompidou Centre Paris. Holding ref. AM 2023-361. No Publisher unknown

A Lovely 1793 Printing of the Notorious Les Trois Imposteurs

The most ubiquitous and influential of the clandestine philosophical manuscripts

ANON Traité des trois Imposteurs A Treatise on the Three Imposters De L'imprimerie Philosophique En Suisse 1793. 1 blank leaf TP TP 3 168 i iii = Table des Matieres 1 blank leaf. 12mo. The authorship has been variously attributed to Lucas Faint-Glain Boulainvilliers Levier Vroesen Aymon and even to Baron dHolbach. Because of its heretical and blasphemous content Israel in Radical Enlightenment says on p. 695 that it surpasses infinitely in atheistical profanity even those works of Spinoza which are regarded as the most pernicious this text was long an underground affair never officially published showing up in slightly different hand-written versions and frequently seen incorporated with other texts. Its history is still confused by the fact that everyone involved with this work was so secretive an understandable position to take given the harsh penalties including death that could result from being associated with this text in any way.

The first printed appearance the text seemed to have been just a part of a larger work La Vie et lEsprit de Spinosa which had a tinypress run in 1719 by a Dutch printer see Israel Radical Enlightenment 684 & 700. The text of Traite des trois Imposteurs was then excerpted and avidly copied by hand and circulated among the most radical free thinkers of Europe who frequently paid exorbitant prices just for the privilege of owning a copy.

Beginning in 1768 printers became brave enough or government supervision lax enough that they actually began to print and surreptitiously sell various editions of the text. Offered here is a 1793 edition of this revolutionary and heretical work.

The short treatise presents a direct assault on the three great monotheistic religions and challenges the integrity of their founding figures Moses Jesus and Muhammad claiming that these religions lack any substance whatsoever and owe their success in the world to the fear that underlies all of their basic assumptions and pronouncements. In contradistinction to these three frauds the text claims that Nature as the only god that is acting within the world.

For more details and a scholarly discussion of this important work see Jonathan Israels Radical Enlightenment Oxford University Press Oxford 2001 especially pages 684-703.

CONDITION: Very good to near fine in contemporary full leather gilt decorated spine with title in gilt to black panel. Mior cracking to hinges. Decorative endpapers. Former owners bookplate to verso of front endpaper. Small elegantly scripted annotations to the first page of the Reponse and Copie pages. 51238Germany 1968. Original silk-screened poster printed in black and red measuring 84 à 59 cm. Very good or better. A remarkably drastic anti-war poster issued as a fake poster for the fourth Documenta in Kassel held in 1968. The fourth installment of the famous contemporary art fair - considered the most important European art fair of the decade - heavily featured American art especially Pop Art and Op-Art including works by Andy Warhol. The press conference prior to the opening of the show was interrupted by protests that included artists such as Wolf Vostell and Jörg Immendorff who reacted against the relative lack of political contributions as well the dearth of works of Fluxus and Action art in the exhibition.

The artist and publisher of this work are unknown and as of February 2021 the poster could not be traced by us via KVK OCLC. unknown books

1775001856London: G. Pearch 1775. Here is a stunning exceptional and rare set of collected poetry in a fine binding from the late 18th Century. This is an expansion of the collection published by Robert Dodsley 1703-1764 in 1758. Or perhaps Pearch is just piggy-backing on Dodsley's popularity; he published a two-volume edition in 1768 and expanded it here seven years later. Quite rare; Quercus has found only the British Library holding copies. These are bound in lovely smooth calf tooled and banded on the spines filled with gilt. Red spine label "Pearch's Collection". These are ASSOCIATION COPIES. Blindstamped with the Coat of Arms of Trinity College Dublin on the front covers. In addition there is a Printed and Signed label affixed to the front paste-downs indicating the books were awarded as a prize by Trinity in 1777. Clean texts with bright laid paper and marbled endpapers. 317 316 324 and 316 pages all indexed in the rear. Volume Four includes an errata page and 2 pages of publisher's adverts. 540949Englewood Cliffs N.J.: Prentice-Hall 1971. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Fine in very near fine dust jacket with tiny creases on the jacket flaps. Fictitious "diary" of a smart 15 year-old who descends into heavy drug use and other ills allegedly found by her parents after her death by overdose and published as a cautionary tale. The book was actually the product of author and "editor" Beatrice Sparks and other "preparers" who have since produced a number of similar first-person warnings for youth though the exact authorship remains unknown. Despite or perhaps because of its manufactured origins surprisingly compelling reading. Basis for a 1973 TV movie with William Shatner as Alice's father and Mackenzie Phillips in her prophetic debut as one of Alice's ill-influencing friends. Something of a cult classic reprinted several times and very scarce in the first edition. Prentice-Hall hardcover

Internally nice and clean. 60 pp.

The exceedingly rare first edition of “Le Bourru†a comedy in 24 acts a fine example of early eighteenth-century comic theater drawing heavily on the tradition of Molière. We have not been able to trace a single copy in the trade nor does OCLC list any copies. The authorship has puzzled readers and bibliographers since its publication: Immediately after its publication it was questionably attributed to playwright Jean Palaprat. The attribution seems to originate from a confusing bibliographic note by Beauchamps in 1706 which have been misread or misinterpreted over time. This early note ambiguously linked Le Bourru to Le Grondeur a known play co-authored by Brueys and Palaprat which created a trend among bibliographers to assume Palaprat's authorship. Subsequent scholars and catalogers De Mouhy de la Vallière and Professor Koch accepted this assumption with varying levels of caution gradually turning it into a fact. Spire Pitou concluded in “Jean Palaprat and Le Bourru 1706â€â€œModern Language Notes†Vol. 75 No. 4 1960 that the Palaprat-attribution is a result of bibliographic tradition rather than actual evidence and that the author is anonymous. The paper also suggests that the play was probably written for a military audience in Holland as it was published in The Hague and set in Namur and contains no offensing political content. hardcover
