The front hinge of volume one has be strengthened. Very uncommon in the leather binding. The gilt lettering is bright. Philip Sheridan was a Union general in the Civil War and his career was noted for his rapid rise to major general and his close association with Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Grant transferred Sheridan from command of an infantry division in the Western Theater to lead the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac in the East. In 1864 he defeated Confederate forces in the Shenandoah Valley and his destruction of the economic infrastructure of the Valley called "The Burning" by residents was one of the first uses of scorched earth tactics in the war. In 1865 his cavalry pursued Gen. Robert E. Lee and was instrumental in forcing his surrender at Appomattox. Sheridan prosecuted the later years of the Indian Wars of the Great Plains. Both as a soldier and private citizen he was instrumental in the development and protection of Yellowstone National Park. The general suffered a series of massive heart attacks two months after sending these memoirs to the publisher. Charles L. Webster & Company,, hardcover

1955171714Beijing: Chinese Youth Publishing House 1955. First edition first printing presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper in Chinese by the Chinese delegation to the Fifth World Festival of Youth and Students "Presented to our dear young friend from America - China Youth League Delegation Warsaw August 1955". Convened by the World Federation of Democratic Youth the festival took anti-imperialism as its theme. More than 30000 people from 114 countries participated and the programme of events included parades speeches performances and sports meets. The proceedings gave everyday Poles an unprecedented opportunity to peek behind the Iron Curtain and ironically helped lay the foundations for the Pozna Protests. Sino-American relations remained strained amidst the fallout from the Korean War. One year earlier at the Geneva Conference John Foster Dulles had famously refused to shake hands with Premier Zhou Enlai. In Warsaw to protest American hard power China's representatives joined Russian and Japanese young people in a spirited rendition of the song "Never Let the Atom Bomb Explode Again". Building bridges with left-wing Americans sympathetic to Beijing was likewise an important part of the Chinese delegation's strategy. Below the presentation inscription is another reading in Chinese "Long live friendly relations between Chinese and American youth! Liu Meiqing". Quarto. Illustrated throughout in colour and black and white; floral vignette on title page. Text in Russian English and French. Original green boards tan cloth backstrip spine lettered and decorated in black front cover lettered in black blue and white decorative endpapers. Boards sunned one tip worn occasional staining and foxing in text: a very good copy. 1st printing of the 1938 edition. October, 1938. Original illustrated wrappers, 12mo (small) , 191 pages, including many, many period ads. Published just one month prior to Kristallnacht, this is a Name and Address Directory of the worlds leading Fur business district, the Brühl, and its counterpart in Berlin, both very heavily Jewish. Divided into 2 sections, one for the Brühl in Leipzig, and the other for Furriers in Berlin. In the 19th and early 20th Century, the Brühl had become synonymous with the Leipzig fur and Tobacco trade. It was the name of the large street where the trade was concentrated (also including Nikolai- and Reichs-strasse) . The Brühl reached its highest density with 794 shops in 1928. Of these, about 58 percent were Jewish run and owned. In the period 1926-1930, the Brühl controlled about one third of the world market in furs. With the great depression, followed by the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, the fur trade went into decline. For political reasons the fascist leadership limited the import quotas for goods from the USSR, such as raw fur. And, of course, increasingly, Jewish merchants in the Brühl were discriminated against and expelled. Many fled to England or the United States, where they established new fur businesses. Following Kristallnacht, which came only 1 month after the publication of this guide in October 1938, it became impossible for Jewish furriers to function. Some of the most famous Jewish fur traders included: Julius (Judel) Ariowitsch (1855-1908) ; Chaim Eitingon (1857-1932) , known as "Fur King from Brühl", founder of the Ez Chaim Synagogue and the Jewish hospital; the Frankel family; the Harmerlin Family; John B. (John [Joel] Berend) Oppenheimer & Company; F. Weiss (1893-1982) ; and Theodor Wolf (1833) . OCLC lists only one holding worldwide (German National Library) . Light wear, occational pencil scribbles, overall Very Good Condition. Quite rare and important. (holo2-125-28)

261 pages. "Nazi theory has evolved the concept of 'Lebensraum' (living space) - Nazi practice has realised the fact of 'Todesraum' (death space)" - subtitle. Author conversed with scores of Polish refugees in Paris. "As I listened to their stories I saw with searing vividness the similarity between what is happening in Poland today and what happened in Belgium 25 years ago; the similarity and the difference, which lies in the fact that the Germans today are even more brutal, more bestial than they were in 1914-1918. I decided to publish these stories, together with an essay comparing German conduct during the last war and during the present one, and showing that if they have changed at all it has been for the worse. Some of the stories are so horrible that they exhaust all ordinary human capacity for horror and indignation. However, some, at least, of the victims of German blood lust have escaped death. Let them speak." - Publisher's Statement, pages 6-7. Heavy soiling to publisher's yellow cloth. Front hinge starting. Moderate foxing to and near endpapers. Dust jacket not included. A worthy reference copy of this grim testament to the suffering of the Poles in WWII. Enser p.341. Book

[12], 304 pages. 21.3 x 14 cm. Reprint of the 1944 first edition. Seventeen pages of black and white photographic plates. World War II required the United Nations to prepare for the threatened invasion of the American continent by the Axis Powers. Careful study indicated the Nazi timing of this invasion was the early winter of 1941-42. So confident in this plan were the Nazi Storm Troopers that German prisoners of war, landing at a port in the St. Lawrence from England in 1940, were convinced they would soon be released by air-borne troops and armed again to assist in the plan of Nazi invasion. The George McNamara Construction Company of Toronto was awarded the contract for building the airport at Goose Bay, Labrador, and Mr. William Durrell (to whom this book is dedicated) was appointed General Superintendant of construction.- Paraphrased from Chapter 1. Carr [1895-1595] was appointed Senior Naval Officer at Goose Bay in June 1943. Here he recounts his fascinating experiences there, concluding with his reflections on the war and the nature of man. Appendix provides a partial list of the mountain of equipment brought in by ship or plane to construct this mammoth project. Somewhat above-average wear to publisher's blue cloth. Binding intact. Prior owner's name, Maj. W.A. Randall, penned atop front free endpaper. Dust jacket not included. Carr, who served in both world wars, would later pen Pawns in the Game and The Red Fog Over America, which sold by the hundreds of thousands. A sound copy of this fascinating and relatively unknown WWII history. Cooke [3] p.81, Enser p.32, Whiteman 994. Book
