020033Very Good. A collection of letters from the vice president of the Alaska Fishing and Development Company written to his endearing wife. This collection includes 38 letters from Clair Cook C. E. Cook to his wife Ella Cook plus 6 letters addressed to "Ella" or "Sister" from various family members. Letters are on sheets measuring 6" x 9 ¼" or 8" x 10"; two letters are typed the rest are ALS. All are dated between 1904 and 1905. 16 on Alaska Fishing and Development Company letterhead; 18 on Hotel Donnelly Tacoma Washington letterhead; 1 on American Fish Company letterhead; 1 on St. Helena Sanitarium letterhead; the remaining letters are on plain sheets. Overall very good with light toning and foxing and a few letters have minor chipping along edges not affecting content. About 16 of the letters mention Clair's business dealings most are vague and discuss his travel plans and limited to a few lines. But 7 or 8 of these letters go into detail about the ships used in the business tonnage of fish caught and market prices and the company's stock. In a letter written from Pleasant Bay Alaska on June 2 1904 Clair writes of 10 tons of Halibut ready for market; June 19th 1905 he writes about a visit from "Mr. Stroud" the president and general manager of the company and also about the selling and buying of shares in the company stock; and on May 27th 1905 he writes of the Treadwell Mines in Alaska sending ore to a smelter likely in Tacoma WA. On June 28th 1905 Clair writes "We got up steam and pumped the water out of the ship today trimmed the ship and secured cargo so it would not slide while crossing Queen Charlotte Sound; it sometimes gets a little rough there " All of the letters written by Clair show his incredible devotion to wife. Each letter starts with "Dearest little wife" "Darling precious wife" or "Darling loyal heart" and are filled with Clair's exclaims of ardent love the pains of separation and his wish to be home with his wife and little daughter in California. Although the letters mostly discuss love for his wife the timing of the letters is important. Written just after the Klondike Gold Rush 1896-1900 and when commercial fishing and canneries were becoming increasingly popular along the Alaskan coast these letters demonstrate an interesting perspective of the development of the last frontier. The details of daily life of an officer of a growing fishing company the attractive letterhead and the quantity of letters make this collection important to researchers and historians of American fisheries and the Alaska Territory. . unknown

London: Printed for John Stockdale Scatcherd and Whitaker John Fielding and John Hardy 1784. Four volume set bound in two. The first octavo edition of Cook's third voyage. Half-leather. Flaws: Vol. 1 lacks 2 leaves from the Contents section. Vol. 2 lacks title page. All except Vol. 3 lack half-titles. Lacks the large folding map and two plates. Has the folding map of Hawaii the frontispiece portrait and 46 of 48 further plates. The front board of the first volume is detached. The top half of the front join of the second volume is cracked with the backstrip pulling away and the front board weakly attached. Average wear chipping scuffing. The pages of the first of the four volumes have a heavy amount of foxing smudges stains creases a little marginal dampstain and a lot of tears with several tears reaching into text without loss one page torn half across without loss a large torn-out piece of margin nicking a few letters a large tear at a hinge with a repair. The other volumes have a more average level of foxing smudges and minor blemishes excepting some ugly staining to the first Contents leaf of Vol. 3 pictured; a large tear into text elsewhere but neatly repaired without loss; a plate torn near the hinge with slight loss to illustration pictured; and the creased torn and repaired folding plate of Cook's death pictured. Some of the plates are trimmed a little close in a few instances nicking the text and in one instance slightly cutting into the illustration. The folding map of Hawaii has tears is laid down on a plain paper backing but remains rather attractive. Good condition on balance. Prima edizione. Leggero foxing su alcune carte, piccolo forellino di tarlo, nel complesso un esemplare molto buono. Segnatura manoscritta di antico possessore alla prima sguardia. Di grande rarità, presente in Iccu in una sola copia (Biblioteca d'arte e di storia di San Giorgio in Poggiale - Bologna). Pregevole raccolta di ordinanze, risalenti ai primi del Seicento, rivolte ai sensali e ai “cozzoni” (i sensali di animali, e in particolari di cavalli) della città di Bologna e del suo contado, in materia di commercio. Seguono le ‘Addizioni’ ai capitoli seicenteschi, datate al 1731. Il volume è stampato da Lelio dalla Volpe, attivo nella prima metà del Settecento, e che divenne uno dei più importati tipografi-stampatori di Bologna. Al frontespizio grande stemma xilografico, all’interno pregevoli testatine e finalini a motivi floreali; in apertura, notevole capolettera con paesaggio agreste.

Elegante mezza pelle di vitello coeva con piatti e tagli marmorizzati, dorso a nervi titolo impresso in oro e impressioni a secco agli scomparti, fregi dorati.<BR>Prima edizione illustrata da due litografie fuori testo di Henry Monnier. <BR>Brillat - Savarin intellettuale e gastronomo (aveva studiato legge e fu magistrato, diplomatico e musicista, insignito della Legion d'Onore) si dedica inizialmente a scritti di carattere giuridico - economico, ma solo successivamente avrà la sua notorietà grazie alla pubblicazione della " Physiologie du Gout", che viene pubblicata un anno prima della sua morte. L'opera alterna riflessioni sui cinque sensi, descrizioni e aneddoti, digressioni filosofiche e di costume, annotazioni scientifiche; Brillat- Savarin si ispira per le meditazioni, a maestri quali Voltaire, Rousseau, Fenelon, Buffon, Cochin e d'Aguesseau. Il linguaggio che l'autore sceglie è spontaneo, ricco di massime e proverbi vecchi come l'umanità, mescola umorismo e impertinenza, insolenza e derisione; come modernista, egli usa tutti gli stilemi letterari, e quando quelli francesi non sembrano bastare, non esita mai a prendere in prestito una parola, come il sorso inglese drink.<BR>Si tratta di un caposaldo teorico della cucina borghese, che eserciterà una straordinaria influenza sulla letteratura culinaria futura; i suoi importanti scritti, analizzati anche dopo la morte dell'autore, saranno annoverati tra i classici.<BR>Aprono l'opera 20 venti divertenti aforismi incentrati sull'arte della gastronomia: "Gli animali si nutrono; l'uomo mangia"; "Solo l'uomo dispirito sa come mangiare"; "Dimmi cosa mangi, ti dirò chi sei"; "La scoperta di un piatto fa la felicità del genere umano più che la scoperta di una stella"; "Un dessert senza formaggio è come una bella donna a cui manca un occhio" ed altri.<BR>Impareggiabile "homme d'esprit", secondo la definizione di Balzac, Brillat-Savarin del cibo non coglie tanto l'aspetto edonistico ma soprattutto quello sociale ed è questo che rende la sua opera così moderna.<BR>Il critico letterario Roland Barthes omaggia l'A. dicendo: Il libro di Brillat Savarin è dall'inizio alla fine "propriamente umano" poichè è il desiderio che distingue l'uomo. All'autore è stato dedicato nel 1930 il formaggio Brillat Savarin.<BR>Bell'esemplare in elegante legatura. Ottimo stato di conservazione, minime fioriture tipiche della carta. <BR>Vicaire 117:"Nel considerare i piaceri della tavola sotto i più diversi aspetti, m'ero reso conto da tempo che in questo campo c'era da fare qualcosa di meglio di un semplice libro di cucina, e che molto si poteva dire su funzioni così essenziali, così continue e che influiscono così direttamente sulla salute, sulla felicità e persino sugli affari. Una volta stabilita quest'idea madre, tutto il resto è venuto da sé: mi sono guardato intorno, ho preso appunti, e spesso, in mezzo ai più sontuosi banchetti, il piacere di osservare mi ha salvato dalla noia conviviale.
