The prince who has been raised on reading novels since his youngest age is in search of this utopian country which he finally discovers underground. All the things described trees rocks are contaminated by what is found in novels thus the rocks are tender having listened to so many complaints from heroes. The marvelous journey is in fact a critique of very fine intelligence on the novelistic writing of the 17th century for the author never undertakes a fundamental critique he has written a travel novel about the country of novels which reveals its ridiculous aspects and excesses and it is true that a certain novelistic production of the 17th century often proves the author right with its cohort of shepherds ancient heroes and fairies. The first three volumes contain all the letters on Greece as well as in the third volume the voyage to Italy the last contains other opuscules by the author: Essays on the Elegies of Tibullus followed by the translation of these The Seasons and Light Poetry. Numerous floral head- and tailpieces flower baskets carnations. Contemporary full porphyry sheep binding. Smooth spine decorated with fleurons roulette at tail. On the lower joint of volume I nibbling also on the upper joint of volume 3. Paper generally quite fresh sometimes a few spots in the upper margins or on the verso of the engravings. Overall very fine copy. Broader than its title suggests the Literary Voyage of Greece contains numerous information on the Turks Armenians and their customs and naturally the peoples of Greece. The letters are the work of a merchant residing in Constantinople Monsieur Guys addressed to an art lover Bourlat de Montredont. Deeply enamored with belles-lettres and research on Antiquity the author in his description of Greece its customs and practices draws his material from ancient writers by establishing constant parallels with modern Greece showing how much all Greek literature is found in it. Each letter bears on a subject many concern art but some more specific ones deal with furniture jewelry makeup festivals proprieties baths architecture and naturally a domain particularly interesting to the author: commerce and navigation. Certain letters are additions and treat usages among the Turks Jews. An ambitious project by a man anchored in the reality of his time and who spent more than 30 years in the Levant the Literary Voyage of Greece identifies in modern Greece all the heritage of Antiquity and makes modern Greeks the direct heirs descendants of ancient Greeks. The author thus renews interest in voyages to Greece. Before its time it is one of the first works of anthropology. Chez La veuve Duchesne hardcover

English mineralogist and archaeologist teaching at Cambridge University where he became librarian. Clarke was an tireless traveler throughout his life first in Italy Scandinavia Greece Russia Turkey Egypt and the Holy Land; travels which allowed him to collect many minerals and make precise observations of physical and human geography. Besides his critical observations notably on Tsar Paul which earned him a ban from the French government Clarke's journey 1799-1802 is particularly interesting since he traveled beyond the European limits of Russia and dealt with the Don Cossacks whose life organization and customs he describes. He then descended to the Sea of Azov traveled in Crimea to Odessa and to Constantinople. The author's principal quality is his gift of observation and his multiple interests as much for insects venomous snakes as for the customs of Russians and Cossacks or commerce on the Black Sea. Gmelin as botanist and chemist of the Academy of Sciences was sent to explore Siberia by Empress Anne with numerous other scientists as part of a vast governmental exploration project and the voyages took place between 1733 and 1743. Keralio in an interesting preface notably on the deformation of Russian names admits having deliberately reduced the original to 2 volumes the author's exhaustive journal spread over 10 years being very tedious he therefore concentrated on descriptions and everything relating to the voyage itself mines peoples customs food. by classifying the voyage by explanatory chapters the themes thus being easily found through the table. The voyage is completed by a history of Russian navigations and discoveries in the glacial and northern sea of the south Kamchatka with Bering's navigations. The work undoubtedly forms a very precious source of information on Siberia. In his account Gmelin did not neglect to make known the physical and moral character the religious practices and habits of the different peoples of the vast region of Siberia but he applied himself more particularly still to describing the mines and foundries which are the principal wealth of this country and he did so as a scholar initiated in this field.
