Buon esemplare.

Vols. 1-2: XIX. yüzyil ortalarindan XX. yüzyila Bogaziçi'nin Rumeli Yakasi fotograflari. Vols. 3-4 : XIX. yüzyil ortalarindan XX. yuzyila Bogaziçi'nin Anadolu Yakasi fotograflari. 4 volumes set. From Konstantiniyye to Istanbul - Photographs of the Rumeli Shore of the Bosphorus from the mid- 19th to the 20th century is comprised of works by photography masters who practiced their art in Istanbul from the end of the 19th to the early years of the 20th century. The unique selection from The Suna and Inan Kiraç Foundation Photography Collection reveal the magnificent structures, the daily life and the intriguing personalities of a past Istanbul. Istanbul has evolved into an industrial city and an enormous metropolis: its silhouette, architecture, vehicles, bridges, quays, streets and public spaces have attained an entirely different appearance. Masters such as James Robertson, Félice Beato, Pascal Sébah, Polycarpe Joaillier, Abdullah Brothers, Guillaume Berggren, Bogos Tarkulyan, Mihran Iranian and Gülmez Brothers, not only document the nostalgic images of the city during their time, but also took us along a pleasant journey extending from Karaköy to Rumelifeneri through photographs taken with the difficult and onerous techniques of the time.

20997Very good. Four photograph albums containing a total of 558 mounted images documenting military training and service in Japan in 1920s and 30s all in very good condition. Although we acquired these albums together they appear to have belonged to different people. Most if not all were officers. One album has handwritten captions the others do not but do have some group photographs with captions in the negative. Two identity documents are tipped in to one album that we are told are for people with the family names Yokoo and Hayashi. During the interwar years Japanese culture was pervaded by the conviction that a strong military was the solution to most problems foreign and domestic. The Army enjoyed considerable independence from the civilian government and various factions within the military played a major role in directing the country's foreign policy. As described by historian David Hunter-Chester in The Culture of Military Organizations Cambridge 2019 the Imperial Japanese Army's "organizational culture produced tough proficient and courageous soldiers." These albums reflect great pride in military service with numerous images of their subjects in dress uniform singly and in groups and engaged in military exercises including bayonet training firing machine guns field and parade drills physical fitness ropes course gymnastics equestrian training cleaning and assembly of weapons and more. There are also images of soldiers in the classroom at leisure sporting events sumo at a public bath etc. and at special events and celebrations—the latter characterized by an abundance of Japanese and Imperial Army flags. These albums reflect an ethos that was soon to vanish. The military culture of pride in excellence according to Hunter-Chester "left it unable to deal with military losses; it was a culture that prized reputation over public honesty ritualized death and placed its own judgment above question. According to its own creed the Army should have ‘done its utmost to protect the state.' Instead its soldiers are remembered in Japan and much of the world as ‘beasts.'". unknown
191075672Jerusalem: Jamal Brothers 1910-1921. This very attractive item is comprised of the complete set of 110 photogravures of photographs by Schlomo Narinsky. Each gravure measures 5 3/8 x 3 1/2 inches and all are mounted into archival bifolios measuring 8 1/2 x 11 inches. Each gravure has its accompanying tissue guard. Table of contents printed of three buff sheets which are laid in at the front. The whole housed in a custom gray cloth clamshell case with a deep burgundy morocco gilt lettering label affixed to the front and spine. Very fresh and clean. A pleasure to behold.Just about everything in this cradle of religion is portrayed by these Narinsky photogravures. The photos include a portrait of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda; Portrait of Sarah Aaronsohn; The Outlet of the Jordan River; Ain Fara Ravine: A Yeminite Beauty; A Bedouin and His Pride; The Wilderness of Judea; The Colony of Jann in Galilee; The Mosque El-Aksa; A View of Tiberius; etc. Each print is discreetly numbered in a very diminutive hand in pencil.Narinsky was born in the village of Abyan in southern Russia now Ukraine. He studied painting in Moscow as a child and photography in Paris 1904 and Berlin 1905. He briefly returned to Russia after finishing his studies but immigrated to Ottoman Palestine in 1906 where he opened a photography studio in Jerusalem called "Photographic Unity" with Yaakov Hotimsky. His wife Sonia also a photographer was a partner in the studio. While he was there he made a postcard collection of Palestine. Narinsky's photography was influenced by the works of 19th-century European photographers. When World War I came Narinsky was exiled to Egypt where he worked in photography in Alexandria and then in Cairo. He moved to Paris in 1932 and opened another photography studio. In World War II he was interned in the detention camps in Saint-Denis and Drancy and was released in 1944 as part of a prisoner exchange. The couple returned to Palestine and settled in Kibbutz Ein Harod. In the 1950s they moved to Haifa where they remained until his death in 1960. These sets were put together by photographer Tim Tidal in 1980. In his title list there are 118 entries but the vast majority of copies sold have had 110 photogravures and many have even fewer; one copy at auction recently only had 70. No doubt he ran out of certain images quite soon but 110 seems to be a number that held steady for the majority. [Jamal Brothers] hardcover
19332881<p>7 x 11-3/4 inches. 28 leaves containing 52 b&w photographs and three blue photographs as well as 17pp of holograph poetry written in white on the black leaves and two hand-painted color illustrations. Black hardcover post-bound album stamped in gilt. A few photos starting to come loose else fine. Very Good or better.</p><p>An exquisite photograph album about the travels through Kashmir of one man and two women -- all white possibly British inscribed only to "Auntie Gillmore" -- filled with vernacular photographs of the countryside and local people. Nearly all of the photographs are captioned and the three blue photos appear to be made after the method devised by Frank A. Perrett to photograph volcanoes in the early 1900s rather than being cyanotypes.</p><p>The trio's journey is narrated in rhymed poetry written by the man of the group as revealed on the last page: "The author of the photographs / And also of the paragraphs / Is standing on the Kamri Pass / Complete with alpenstock and glass. / He hears you say 'The verse might be / A little better' but you see / His job lies not in making rhymes / It's more prosaic and the times / When he is bold enough to write / His thoughts in measured words are quite / Rare and few and far between: / Hence all the nonsense you have seen."</p><p>The poetry in this cataloguer's estimation could indeed be better but it nevertheless illuminates the trio's travels which begin in Srinagar and proceed through the Sind Valley and the Kamri Pass. Included are gorgeous shots of Mt. Nanga Parbat Srinigar waterways a market stall a rice barge converted into a houseboat Gurais and much more. Additionally two illustrations one of a flower and one of a pair of colorful hummingbirds have been painted with a deft hand on two leaves.</p><p>A handsomely-produced record of a remarkable journey through 1930s Kashmir.</p> hardcover

Unpaginated 31 leaves all of a weighty card stock or over 60 pages about half with color plates we count 31 but one can quibble about whether one or two of them so qualify. Eleven of these are non-product illustrations -- attempts to capture concepts or abstractions -- the balance being exquisite depictions of the company's fine perfume bottles. The catalogue exudes an unalloyed dreamy luxury in every respects as befits high-end perfume marketing. Cassandre a name adopted by the Ukrainian-born Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron 1901-1968 -- his parents were French -- was a highly celebrated commercial artist theatrical designer magazine illustrator and poster artist. He worked heavily with the prestige printer Draeger as well as the couturier Lucien Lelong and others. In time he was awarded the French Legion of Honor. Lelong was a top Parisian couturier from the twenties til his retirement in the late forties. He was himself not a designer but rather relied on a stable of designers and among his proteges was Christian Dior. As this catalogue also shows dress designers were branching out into fragrances for a long time; this catalogue predates the creation of Chanel No. 5 by a few years. Light wear to the wraps -- a minor closed tear along the upper joint and some minor wrinkling or creasing to the cover paper. Only during the past three decades however has the true appreciation of Chinese paintings become apparent. Today public museums and private collectors are striving to acquire masterpieces. Fortunately this Museum recognized the significance of the pictorial art of China as far back as the early nineties and beginning with the purchase of five paintings by Chou Ching-ch'ang dated 1178-1190 has ever since been assembling worthy paintings. Now it holds an enviable position among similar collections in the world.<br><br>In 1933 the Museum published a Portfolio of Chinese Paintings in the Museum Han to Sung Periods. As its sequel the Museum now offers to the public this Portfolio containing reproductions of paintings from the Yuan Ming and Ch'ing dynasties roughly from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century. <br><br>Anyone who has delved into the field of Chinese paintings is aware that many works especially after the Yuan period bear inscriptions usually of a poetic nature appropriate to the subjects depicted. The reason is not far to seek for many of the celebrated artists were not professional painters but men of letters some of them holding high governmental offices. To them the art of painting was but one of the cultural accomplishments like calligraphy and poetry. It was therefore natural for them to express on the pictorial works their calligraphic skill and poetic thoughts. Thus a picture and the literary writing upon it became integral parts. For this reason included in the descriptive section of this Portfolio are translations of such Chinese inscriptions. One acquainted with the Chinese language knows that a literal rendering of a Chinese composition into English is well-nigh impossible because of the frequent allusions to classical literature and also because of the hidden or double meanings of some phrases. Consequently the English versions which are incorporated in the descriptions are free interpretations. The transcriptions of the original inscriptions are to be found in the catalogue in Chinese accompanying the Portfolio. <br><br>The paintings reproduced in the Portfolio came from individuals as gifts or were acquired from individuals as gifts or were acquired from funds established by legacies. It is regrettable that all of these generous friends are no longer with us. May this publication be regarded as an expression of the deep gratitude of the Department which has been privileged to build the collection!" - Kojiro Tomita Curator of Asiatic Art<br><br>CONDITION: Very near fine this collection is absolutely lovely.
