A well-documented photo album recording the automobile travels of a young German-American woman and her beaus through the West and Midwest from before World War I through the Roaring 20s the Great Depression and post-World War II. The album carefully documents the friends family and places visited as well as the vehicles. The earliest automobile trip involves a 1923 Ford Model T 2-door given to our chronicler by Mac McGuire who also generously presents a trotting racehorse with several photos showing the car scenes in and around Illinois Illinois horse tracks as well as Mac himself. The 1925 Buick 2-door coupe experiences a much wider group of excursions including stops and views through Telluride Colorado with views of the town street scenes the mines as well as the “Gang” at the Hotel Telluride including the Chinese-American Cook. The album also shows views of the Painted Desert the compiler in front of the plane in Rock Springs Wyoming where she takes her first plane ride as well as sitting in the car in front of the US Airmail Service Hangar. In addition there are views of the auto trek to Yellowstone the dams along the way feeding the bears and even the Buick driving through the heavy brush. She apparently owns a 1927 Auburn 8-95 Coupe afterwards and visits include Petaluma California Santa Barbara and Pocatello Idaho with a view of the car and a Native American. The compiler consistently refers to herself as me my and mine and makes references to visiting relatives in 1948 after the War in Germany as well as a Sonnichsen relative released from Russian POW camp in 1948 but no indication of her name. Minor rubbing and edgewear along with minor wear to some of the leaves. A very good exemplar with all the photos retaining bright strong contrast. [1915-1948]. unknown

1780265361780. Pastel on laid watermarked paper. The sheet retains signs of having been stretched as these types of portraits typically were. Dampstain upper right corner tear lower right corner otherwise excellent condition. A strikingly well done portrait of a successful European gentleman with piercing eyes.<br/> <br/> Pastel portraits were popular in Europe Great Britain and America during most of the 18th century especially in the 1770s and 80s. They provided a more rapid way of rendering a likeness in bright colors that didn't yellow. This was a golden age for portrait painting which exemplified the optimistic views of the Enlightenment: a sitter was not ashamed to show his or her wealth contentment or character. Our self -assured subject looks directly at the viewer with piercing eyes calm practical not likely to be fooled. It is an astounding accomplishment; we feel that this was exactly how he was. The artist allowed himself or herself there were a number of excellent female pastel portraitists particularly in France to be subject entirely to what was seen and sensed about this strong indomitable personality.<br/> <br/> Baetjer & Shelly Pastel Portraits. Mounting sheet is watermarked laid paper. Image size: 13 1/2 x 19 inches. A wonderful continental view in the grand tradition of the romantic landscape.<br/> <br/>Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst artists and printmakers which sought to visually record the natural beauties of their surroundings. English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles and on the Continent. Theses image not only inspired a sense of national pride but also served as cherished mementos for eager collectors on the "Grand Tour". Prints and paintings of Ruins and antiquities were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a reminder of their travels or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. This is a wonderful example of a picturesque eighteenth century landscape print. By trimming the image within the platemark and mounting it on a decorative washline background the print has the effect of a landscape painting. The likeness is heightened by the addition of added body colour in the image and the use of a heavy painterly technique of engraving. This practice was common amongst engravers and printsellers who wished to capitalize on this trend for picturesque landscapes. This print is from the famed Oettingen-Wallerstein collection which was compiled over two centuries by various members of the royal household. The collection is known for its stunning impressions and the immaculate condition of its prints.<br/> <br/>Clayton The English Print 1688-1802 p. 155; Lugt Les Marques de Collections Supplement 2715a. unknown books

1798146971798. Watercolor. Painted on watermarked laid wove paper. Watermarked with a Russell & Co 1798 watermark. In excellent condition with the exception of a number of tiny tears along the edges of the sheet. A crease along the left top corner of sheet. Right margin is creased outside image. A beautiful watercolor depicting a lively port with ships in the harbor.<br/> <br/> Unfortunately we have not been able to discover any information concerning the artist of this beautiful painting. It bears no title or signature therefore it is almost impossible to ascertain the location of the scene or its creator. It is obviously from the hand of an accomplished amateur painter who had a natural talent for design and a keen eye for detail. The scene depicts a busy town and port with a multitude of galleons in the harbor. The artist has obviously spent a considerable amount of time producing this painting and has included a wealth of intricate details. The ship in the lower right corner of the painting flies a British flag off its bow and there is a military encampment on the outlying shore of the bay. These details and the inclusion of the windmill suggest that the image depicts a European port. Towards the end of the eighteenth century Britain was in a nearly constant state of war with Europe English and Continental privateers conducted an ongoing battle on the high seas. The inclusion of numerous ships may be an allusion to this turbulent period in British history. The work was most likely painted by a British artist since the paper was produced by the British papermakers Russell & Co. unknown

19730N.p. Chicago: 1969. Original silk-screened poster in three colors 23" x 29". Browned at margins but image area bright and clean. Archivally hinged to acid-free backing in gallery frame. Brian Flanagan b. 1946 was a member of both SDS and the Weathermen and directly connected to the fatal Greenwich Village apartment explosion in which three Weathermen were killed while preparing for a bomb attack on Fort Dix Flanagan had reputedly left the apartment briefly for more supplies. This extremely rare poster promotes Flanagan's parodic write-in campaign for Mayor of Chicago during the Days of Rage. Following a fateful run-in with City Attorney Richard Elrod on the streets of Chicago in which Elrod was left with a broken neck and partial paralysis Flanagan was tried for attempted murder and inciting mayhem. He was eventually acquitted on all charges but the case became a cause celebre for the Weathermen and other radical left groups. An extremely ephemeral piece likely produced in tiny quantities and posted even less. unknown books

1825000459London. Very Good. 1825. Disbound. On offer one of the earliest books devoted to riddles puzzles and mind-games. Circa 1825. Highly unusual with no copy in the British Library and as such very rare. The Book: The London Riddler or 'The art of teasing made easy: consisting of enigmas charades rebusses conundrums and transpositions: original and selected from the most approved sources and classically arranged according to an entirely new plan.' London : Hodgson and Co 1825 198 p. 1 illustrated folded leaf of various plates: 60 ill.; 16 cm. Original brown boards and paper spine label present but off interiors generally clean with only the occasional spot. There is a variant edition in the Library of Congress exactly matching this save for the imprint of William Cole with no mention of Hodgson. Riddles while today perhaps more associated with children's games did occupy an important and esteemed place in literature and history. They served not only as an amusement but to cultivate the intellect and memory. Voltaire Cervantes Goethe and Dickens all conceived riddles and their more modern appearance in literature can be found in the Hobbit and of course Harry Potter. Certainly this unusual and rare book collects many fine lost riddles and puzzles and serves as testament to 19th century leisure education and perhaps most of all British wit. The Library of Congress copy LC Control Number: 91156584 is found in the The McManus-Young Collection which "provides a rich survey of the literature of what Dr. Young terms "illusion practices" the magician's manipulation of the imagination of others and includes works on conjuring ventriloquism fortune-telling spiritualism witchcraft gambling hypnotism automata and mind reading." It appears in fact as perhaps the earliest book of its type in the collection. It should be noted that this anonymous work may be by a female writer. The British Library does contain a later 1838 volume entitled "Teasing made easy; a new pocket manual for all who would excel in this fashionable accomplishment and most important branch of the fine arts by a popular female practitioner." That volume appears to be based on or perhaps a later edition of the work for sale here.
