There are a total of 66 pages filled out. The diary was kept by a U.S. sailor who made entries from his departure date in San Fransisco on July 1 1907 to Nov. 10 1907 when he arrived in Hong Kong. The first page reads "DIARY OF MY TOUR AROUND THE WORLD". The sailor first writes "JULY 1 1907 - SIGNED ON U.S. ARMY TRANSPORT SHERMAN AS AN OILER". The following pages are headed "AT SEA - HONOLULU - MIDWAY ISLAND - GUAM - MANILA - CAVITTE - HONG KONG". His voyage continues ending in Hong Kong. His descriptions of the voyage other sailors experiences native people sights points of interest etc. are very interersting and quite descriptive. 14306London Publish’d Boston Republish’d by W. Norman 1801. . 18 leaves 18mo 5½ x 3½ inches comprising engraved frontispiece engraved title a leaf of letterpress text 12 leaves of engraved hierogylphs on the 12 subjects a leaf of letterpress text and two blank leaves the blank recto of the frontispiece and the final blank leaf pasted to the original embossed colored wrappers as issued some early and neat hand-coloring; a well-used and soiled copy with two clean tears repaired and two hieroglyphic leaves "Modesty" and "Knowledge" with corners torn away but with loss only of the line borders the plates for "Religion" and "Curiosity" less fully inked than the others but all readable. Expertly restored and resewn in the original embossed and colored wrappers. Three early ownership inscriptions: "E. Weston" this lined through on the title-page and replaced with "George Appleton’s 1804" or possibly "1809" and on the blank verso of the title a large and calligraphic signature "Nathaniel Thomas". First and apparently the only American edition. The Boston publisher William Norman also published an edition of the New Hieroglyphic Bible in 1794 which was successful enough for him to reprint or reissue it in 1796. Doubtless that success inspired him to produce the present Hieroglyphic Amusement which had been published in London by John Wallis as a set of twelve engraved cards accompanied by a small printed booklet in 1791. Jill Shefrin mentions the Wallis publication in her Make it a Pleasure and not a Task: Educational Games for Children in Georgian England: Princeton University Library Chronicle 60 1999. Wallis published several sets of rebus cards: in 1791 a set of twelve cards entitled Hieroglyphic Amusements. . . . The passage on Education recalls Locke: "As the young plant groweth as it is bent. . . so is a young child in the hands of the mother. - Trust not a man-servant with the education of thy son nor a maidservant with the education of thy daughter." This American publication is even rarer than sets of the London cards. There are two copies in OCLC AAS and Peabody Essex. The Peabody Essex library catalogue entry gives "4 pages 12 leaves" i.e. 14 leaves: is their copy complete; the American Antiquarian Society copy is backlogged for cataloguing. 140946234UK: Unknown 1980. Near Fine. Two vintage anarcho-punk/ peace punk armbands from the United Kingdom manufactured circa 1980. Machine sewn white cotton linen with black elastic bands at verso. Screen printed red anarchist designs. Each are 6.5 x 3.5". Near Fine with light fading and minor abrasions at edges.
Scarce in-your-face political ephemera from Britain's angry young and poor. Manufactured roughly one year after Margaret Thatcher's 1979 election -- a vote that solidified the anarchist and punk legions in opposition.
The "Anarchy in '80" armband shows up around the leg of a guitarist in a photo of an obscure UK punk group The Condemned on the blog Leaders of Men taken in 1979 or 1980. The blogger refers to it as "proto crust" which seems accurate; it likely emanated from the cluster of punks around Crass and Subhumans that would become canonical "crust punk" bands. Octavo; pp. 6264pp.; 4 A-Q8 R4; woodcut title page vignette head- and tail-pieces; full contemporary red imitation morocco double ruled in gilt flat spine decorated in gilt. Extremities rubbed with boards occasionally exposed contemporary blue ribbon marker detached but present. A Very Good attractive copy. Pechmeja's best-selling prose poem published anonymously under the patronage of one Madame de Beauvau presumably the Marquise de Boufflers. The work enjoyed both enthusiastic and scathing reviews from the most celebrated literary figures of the time. Readers admired the work's literary beauty and its touching description of friendship while others found fault with the moral and economic message which would be described as socialist in the modern sense. Among the most notable Télephe detractors was the author Jean-François de la Harpe who wrote "The author seems like Rousseau to make a crime out of private property without which no society could exist. He doesn't want children to inherit their fathers' fortunes as if inheritance wasn't a natural right and as if the fathers themselves didn't work for the sake of their children" my translation. Others including the relatively enthusiastic reviewer the Baron von Grimm were nonplussed by Pechmeja's dour description of the fate of man and the injustices of oppression maintaining that while virtue must always be exercised little happiness can ultimately be experienced even with the purest intentions my paraphrase of Michaud and Grimm. Grimm rejects comparisons made to Fénelon's novel Les Aventures de Télemaque 1699 saying that if Marmontel's Les Incas 1747 is the Télemaque for the age of the encyclopedia then Télephe is the Télemaque for economists. Within three weeks of publication sales had dropped dramatically and while the book was reprinted once in the 1790s and subsequently translated into English and German Télephe never re-experienced its initial popularity. 17883005361Pressure" Paris: Dans les Jardins de M. l'Ebahi 1788. A good copy. Octavo half-title woodcut vignette of a ship setting sail at start of text; neat modern quarter calf.

First edition scarce: a witty and urbane discussion of everything from the rules of Japanese society to the French Compagnie des Indes. The unknown author's reflections on religion and satirical comments on Europe meant that the work must have been skirting very close to being censored.

Presumably published in Paris the imprint is meant to refer to l'Ebahi's stately home the Chateau de Pressure in a salon of which the three main characters the much-travelled Monsieur l'Ebahi "Mister Flabbergasted" the Englishman "Thincker" and the Dutchman "Wurtzheim" are comfortably seated as they swap tales of their marvellous adventures not only in Japan but throughout Asia. The whole story is told with such brio that it could almost pass for actual reportage if it were not for the knowing interjections of the author who says at the outset that the only philosophical lesson worth learning is to admire the teachings of Democritus and be amused by the foibles of mankind.

The work does appear quite rare with copies recorded in the British Library and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France but with apparently few others.

. 18605628Japan No Publisher C1860 Première édition / uvre originale.
