Limited and Numbered Signed 1st Edition #293 of 500 copies SIGNED in pencil on the Limitation Page additionally SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on front endpage -"To Helen and Karl Klein with Good Wishes from Ella Young 16 July 1945". Laid in is a 2 page letter handwritten in ink by Ella Young - "Box 136 Oceano Calif. July 1945 Dear Helen & Karl Klein It is a great delight to read your letter and to have your greetings from that part of America which first welcomed and enchanted me. America is a living country in the sense that Ireland is living: a country where the mountains cry out to each other and the streams and rivers & forests make a vast music. It is for people such as you & Robert & Marie Lawson to interpret such a country or rather to be initiated by such a country and invited into its hidden realms and its sacred unseen cities. I count myself lucky to have lived in Ireland and to have known something of America. There is a book of mine "Celtic Wonder Tales" Dutton & Co. which contains fragments of the Celtic Myth of Creation. The Universe taking form through successive invasions from the God-World. It has too much condensed the famous Destruction of Da Dergas Hostel. Do you know "The Voyage of Bran Son of Febal" translated by Kuno Meyer published by David Nutt in the Strand London 1895. You should be able to get it from any good library. It is a saga that has always fascinated me. My greetings to you and to the Dawsons. I hope that you will write some again asap. Ella Young I am sending you by post a book of mine". The book which she sent by post is Very Good tape residue to the endpages from the letter having been taped in page containing the first poem in the book toned from newspaper clipping obituary laid in boards soiled. 1930List2725Fort Knox Kentucky 1930. One 4 x 5.5 inch notebook; approximately 150 handwritten pages with many more blank. Light wear to binding foxing to top page edges else fine; near fine overall. The Civilian Conservation Corps was a New Deal work relief program that ran from 1933 to 1942 and provided manual labor jobs to young men hit by the Great Depression. The men lived in camps and were provided with meals clothing medical care and small salaries and performed conservation-related work on federal lands especially national forests. Will Morgan was a CCC member living at Fort Knox Kentucky. Fort Knox was the first stop for CCC enrollees and most were sent on to other locations. At first the CCC was open to men ages 18 to 25; given when the poems were written Morgan would have been born between 1909 and 1916.

Many of the poems are love poems for various women or Morgan’s observations about life and meaning; the poems about the CCC are of primary interest. These often complain about life and work at Fort Knox. The labor is difficult—Morgan seems to have mainly been chopping down trees—and the conditions are far from luxurious:

“I've got the C.C. blues/ By doing what the C.C.'s do./ Wearing shoes as big as a pack/ Wading in mud up to my neck/ The whole world's mud to me by heck./ For I've got those C.C. blues.†“C.C. Bluesâ€

And though the men received paychecks they were small and most of the money went back into expenses:

“The canteen and the laundry/ Take part of my ‘ready’ cash./ My pocket-book begins to look/ Like the remains of the Wall St. crash./ . Then finally to top it off/ The captain takes a fine./ So I guess I'll wait till next month/ Then maybe I'll get mine.†“Payday in Campâ€

Nonetheless Morgan apparently got a lot out of his time with the Corps and felt “prepared to battle upward in life†“Rookiesâ€. For all the hardships Morgan writes:

“The C.C.’s have taught me/ One outstanding thing./ That’s to take with a smile/ Whatever the day may bring./ . When camp days are over/ For life I’ve formed a plan/ Thru summer sun or winter snow/ It’s the smile that makes the man.†“Keep Smilingâ€

Still on leaving Camp Knox he remarked: “Tho now "Adieu" to "Hell with you" as soon as we are gone†“Good by Camp Knoxâ€.

Overall a charming first-person account of one young man’s experience as a “C.C. boy.â€. unknown

The translation of Virgil's works.

Bernardo Daniello was a native of Luca and died in Padua in 1565. This work was published during his life and is a translation of Virgil's four works. He was known as a scholar made translation from the commentaries on classical works and wrote on Dante. His Poetica was his most famous work. Daniello's Poetica 1536 is without doubt the first work of its sort since antiquity and the few passages relative to the drama are of great historical importance. Daniello's ideas are of course derived from the ancients but are clearly stated and must have exercised a profound influence over his contemporaries and successors. Saintsbury says: The first author of one a theory of poetry is generally taken to be Daniello…it has such good claims to be among the very earliest vernacular disputations of a general character on poetry in Italy'. There is a mixture of Aristotle and Horace in the work. Daniello brings his skill of poetry to the translations of Virgil's works from the Latin to the Italian. A monumental work first published by Giovanni Johann Gryphio in 1545. This is a colophoned and engraved work that has been rebacked and rebound and is in fresh condition with a couple of minor ink spots. No worms and with the occasional paper tear but not affecting the text. Gryphio was one of the premier printers in Venice and used only the finest rag paper. This book in its present condition will last another 500 years. Collation as follows with corresponding notes to the colophons and images. blank a4-b4; Primo-A4-H4; Secunda-I4 K4-P4; Terzo-P4 verso Q4-T4; V4 X4; Quarto- X4 verso Y4-Z4; AA4-CC4 blank. 1549. Type set at last page. Four etchings three similar and one different. Colophons at each book as well.

Publius Vergilius Maro October 15 70 BCE – September 21 19 BCE later called Vergilius and known in English as Virgil or Vergil was a classical Roman poet. He was the author of epics in three modes: the Bucolics or Eclogues the Georgics and the substantially completed Aeneid the last being an epic poem in the heroic mode which comprised twelve books as opposed to 24 in each of the epic poems by Homer and became the Roman Empire's national epic. Legend has it that Virgil was born in the village of Andes near Mantua in Cisalpine Gaul Gaul south of the Alps; present-day northern Italy. Some scholars have claimed Celtic ancestry based upon the location of his birth and upon a perceived "Celtic" strain in his verse. Other scholars suggest Etruscan or Umbrian descent by examining the linguistic or ethnic markers of the region. Analysis of his name has led to beliefs that he descended from earlier Roman colonists. Modern speculation ultimately is not supported by narrative evidence either from his own writings or his later biographers. Etymological fancy has noted that his cognomen MARO shares its letters anagrammatically with the twin themes of his epic: AMOR love and ROMA Rome.
Title: La Georgica di Virgilio.
Uniform Title: Georgica.
