Ex typographia Francisco Martinez Matriti Madrid Madrid 1629 20 x 29.50 cm relié SOLÓRZANO PEREIRA Juan de De iusta indiarum occidentalium inquisitione acquisitione & retentione Ex typographia Francisco Martinez Matriti Madrid 1629 small in-folio 20 x 295 cm 6 751 pp. 100 contemporary vellum First edition very rare. A very attractive frontispiece-title by Roberto Cordier showing an altar with allegories of Faith and Religion the king of Spain with one foot on an Globe supported by Neptune. A second volume was published in 1639 on the government of the West Indies. Contemporary speckled limp vellum. Jansenist spine. Red morocco title-piece. Spine faded with black spots. Small lacks to head and foot of joints. Trace of a yellow dampstain to right-hand corner of last twenty leaves. Letter to Phillip IV of Spain and introductory portions lacking a total of 11 leaves. In 1618 Juan de Solórzano Pereira wrote the king a petition to make him part of a book project on the West Indies. King Philip IV was seduced by the general idea of legally asserting once and for all the legitimacy of the Spanish possessions in America and financed the first book on justice but not the second on the forms of government which appeared in 1639. The author had been a judge in Lima since 1609 by Royal appointment. The Viceroy of Peru appointed him Governor of Huancavelica a mining outpost of key economic importance to Spain an office he was to fill during his eighteen years in Peru as well as Procurator to the Supreme Council of the Indies Real y supremo consejo de Indias. Pereira developed an extensive and detailed knowledge of Spanish jurisprudence in the West Indies studied numerous documents and ended up with a significant wealth of knowledge especially on the ancient customs of the indigenous peoples. The first part of the book is dedicated to studying the laws that allowed the attachment of the American possessions to the crown of Castille. Here the focus is the definitive legitimation of the Spanish possessions in America. The author then looks at the question of the Church and its relations with the Spanish crown as well as laws on government in general the administration of justice and finally the laws regulating relations with the indigenous peoples and territories. The importance of Pereiras work is to be found in his relentless effort to find the history and origin of each law. 1680 saw the publication of the famous collection of the laws of the Indies the Recopilacion de las leyes des las Indias but this could not replace the excellent work of Pereira who spent a long time studying the oldest laws as well as those of the Indies. In fact all the ancient laws and their indigenous origins disappeared from the collection of the laws of the Indies and Pereiras work would remain key for the history of the West Indies and Spanish Americas. 187451011Paris: E. Dentu 1874. Fine. E. Dentu Paris 1874 12 x 18.50 cm relié First edition of which there were no large paper copies. Near contemporary red half morocco over marbled paper boards by P. Ruban spine in six compartments raised bands bounded by black fillets date gilt at foot of spine marbled endpapers and pastedowns covers preserved top edge gilt. Attractive ex libris engraved by Provost-Blondel on pastedown representing a helmet with a feather medallion and a strip with the motto Tojours en face. The ex libris belonged to Victor Coué a 2nd Lieutenant killed in the First World War. This copy has two frontispieces: one lithograph heightened by Félicien Rops showing a caricature of Barbey d'Aurevilly with the caption Il n'a pour page que son ombre. TS his page is none other than his shadow and a portrait of the author engraved by Paul-Adolphe Rajon 1843-1888. This copy is further enriched with the eponymous series of engravings by Félicien Rops done between 1882 and 1886 with a view to a new edition by Alphonse Lemerre. The meeting of these two major works of literature and history of art from the end of the 19th century makes for an exceptional and unique copy since contrary to what is generally thought Rops' prints never actually accompanied Barbey's text in a genuine illustrated edition. The series is composed of three frontispiece plates: La Femme et la folie dominant le monde I et II Woman and Madness Ruling the World I and II Le Sphinx The Sphinx and six others referring respectively to six of Barbey's short stories and figuring at the beginning of each: Le Rideau Cramoisi The Cramoisi Curtain Le Plus Bel Amour de Don Juan Don Juan's Finest Affair Le Dessous de cartes d'une partie de whist The Undersides of the Cards in a Game of Whist à un dîner d'athées At an Atheists' Dinner Le Bonheur dans le Crime The Joy of the Crime and La Vengeance d'une femme A Woman's Revenge. 1948872391948. Fine. ""Nose in the air arms flying with nonchalance with joy as Willy Ronis says. black shoes a large hat a wasp waist skirt in the wind and not the slightest idea what all this could be for but all the sunshine of late April in the veil. and like Paris absurdly inimitable."" s. d. avril 1948 21 x 30 cm 4 pages sur 4 feuillets Exceptional complete autograph manuscript by Louis Aragon. 4 pages in pencil on 4 leaves numbered in his hand. Discrete trace of rust discharge on the first leaf and on the verso of the last. Horizontal fold across all leaves. The article would be published under the title ""L'Art de prendre une photo pour Les Lettres Françaises"" Regards May 14 1948. Aragon accompanies the great Willy Ronis during a photographic session for a fashion portrait for Les Lettres Françaises. Following in Ronis's footsteps as he directs his spinning model the writer takes us through four pages across an enchanting Paris where popular life and worldly elegance intermingle. ""The aim was to illustrate Le Nez au vent by Louis Chéronnet. The column's theme was: The Elegance of Paris is moving westward and more specifically focused on avenue Montaigne"" begins Aragon in his chronicle. For the duration of a day the writer documents with fascination the photographer's work in one of his favorite settings: the streets of Paris. Several tableaux unfold in succession in the Montorgueil quarter at the milliner's in Ronis's studio on avenue Montaigne at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées. The key word for both Aragon and Ronis is movement. Photography is not static nor are Aragon's impressions. We jump like the model in the photographer's shots from one place to another. The portrait of the elegant woman expands under the writer's pen to her surroundings to the bubbling life of Paris that stops for an instant to contemplate the model's silhouette animated by the photographer's instructions. Sixty years later Ronis would remember that memorable day: ""Aragon had a very beautiful regard for photography. He knew what an image was. Elsa too. He had me work when he founded and directed Les Lettres françaises. I did several reports for him. The first small report was in 1947 or 48 a report on fashion on avenue Montaigne. Aragon came with me we had chosen a model. I was a bit intimidated by Aragon it was my first contact with him. I wanted to get the maximum from my model I was working very hard because I was nervous. Seeing me work amused him so much that he didn't write the report about the model but about me working. I had seen him quite many times afterward we used the familiar form with each other."" Willy Ronis interview in Libération September 14 2009 Their militant paths crossed on numerous occasions - Ronis contributed through his photographs to witness the social revolts that shook the 1930s while Aragon devoted many articles to them. In 1949 the photographer would follow the commemorative day of the Oradour-sur-Glane tragedy in which nearly 400 artists participated at Aragon's initiative. He would also be the author of beautiful portraits of the Aragon-Triolet couple. Excerpts from the manuscript: Willy Ronis had arranged to meet me at 10:30 at the corner of rue Tiquetonne and rue Montorgueil. Apparently he was photographing athletes there. Ah! it was that restaurant where in the past we used to go eat with Vaillant-Couturier and there were Action Française types who would shoot daggers at us with their eyes. Instead of athletes Willy was there in his velvet jacket with his spectacles taking shots left and right at the counter of a couple of lovers. Sweet the lovers. The little one especially. Perhaps it's a sport. . There is nothing more solemn than Caroline Reboux. It is the temple of hats. If he lived in our times this is where Aristotle would write. Caroline Reboux herself made the bonnets for Nana and Eugénie de Montijo; at her place Bel-Ami would twist h unknown

Otto van Veen's 1550-1629 first published work. Van Veen was a Mannerist painter Flemish art theorist and Rubens' teacher. The work is made up of two series of plates intended to elucidate the moral meaning of theatrical symbols. Each plate has a maxim in capital letters followed by a short poetical extract as well as an explanation in the guise of an extract from Horace or other Roman writers. An important work in which images for the first time take precedence over the text this emblem book shows Venius' talent for bringing together the Flemish pictorial tradition with Italian Mannerism. Is it not he among the unfairly forgotten masters of this age who manages best to marry the individual note of Flemish realism with the ideal flower of Italian grace Charles Blanc Histoire des peintres de toutes les écoles: Ecole ombryenne-romaine Volume 13 1864. In an equally innovative move the painter preferred worldly subjects to the detriment of traditional religious images. A rare edition of one of the most famous emblem books of the 17th century. The ""Céreste Affair"" by Colonel ALEXANDRE Imprimerie Nouvelle Forcalquier s.d. 12 janvier 1946 30.90 x 42.20 cm une feuille ""For a few months now we have been witnessing a regularised passive hunt for patriots too highly noticed it seems at a time when risking their own life and that of their family's was not a shopfront item. The odious thing about this way of acting is that it is strangely reminiscent of the Hitlerians. We dishonour then we wait and see. Regardless of the esteem in which a person is regarded a police visit always leaves a hint of ambiguity it is believed. Vigilance more than ever solidarity. 7 December 1945 addressed by René Char to Francis Ponge The first and only edition of this legendary Céreste Affair poster printed by René Char with a very few copies and posted in the small village of Céreste the heart of his resistance network. Paper slightly yellowed some small marginal tears not affecting the text. Extremely rare this poster is absent from all institutions and auction houses. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France itself only has a reproduction offered by Pierre-André Benoit. The famous placard marks the end of the loving and combative relationship between René Char and the village of Céreste which was nevertheless Captain Alexandre's HQ and the birthplace of one of his most moving romantic adventures with his lover nicknamed la Renarde the Vixen. It is in fact to this isolated Haute Provence village that René Char moves to organise his Resistance network the S. A. P. Section Atterrissage Parachutage responsible for recovering the deliveries of parachuted weapons in the Low Alps and redistributing them to the Maquis. Being a faithful guest in Céreste since 1936 René Char was able to quickly unite the villagers and even the gendarmes who would protect him and help him build his network. Forewarned the Nazis sent a company of SS to Céreste to flush him out raiding all of the houses and violently interrogating the villagers who all knew Char and his lover with whom he was staying. The heroic reaction of the villagers had a lasting effect on René Char who composed in their honour one of the longest and most beautiful pages of Hypnos: the village was besieged gagged hypnotized completely brought to a standstill. Two companies of SS and a detachment of militia held it under the muzzle of their machine-guns and mortars. Then began the ordeal. The inhabitants were tossed out of their houses and summoned to assemble in the central square. . Marcelle had come to my shutter to whisper the word to me. . Blows reached me punctuated by curses. The SS had surprised a young mason who was coming back from retrieving some traps. His fright set him up for their tortures. A voice bent over the swollen body shouting: Where is he Show us followed by silence. And kicks and riflebutts raining. . Then there appeared rushing from each street a flood of women children old men going to the place of assembly according to a concerted plan. They hurried without haste literally streaming over the SS paralyzing them in all good faith. . Furious the patrol ploughed its way through the crowd and made further off. With an infinite prudence now some anxious and kindly eyes looked in my direction passed like a flashing lamp on my window. I half revealed myself and a smile broke from my pallor. I held to these people by a thousand confident threads of which not one would break. I loved my kind wildly that day well beyond sacrifice. A fusional relationship unites the poet and his adopted village and for René Char in the context of Nazi hate and violence Céreste represents the living symbol of the humanist values to be defended and the necessity of his fight. This passion found its incarnation in his Céreste lover: Marcelle Sidoine becomes for him the very image of Céreste of this new country in which he digs his mine and intends to bury the galleries fr Imprimerie Nouvelle unknown

Eisen's paintings mounted on original cardboard with mica paper those by Shuntei on raw silk loose. Modern accordion binding executed in fabric cardboard paper and leather. The ensemble has been meticulously conceived and executed with respect for the paintings. The folding structure is bound to a light green fabric chemise. Each panel unfolds by means of a supple leather band. The paintings already mounted on cardboard have been remounted on another cardboard those on silk benefit from particular treatment; they are simply held by 2 paper strips in the margins. Each painting has an opening frame made from different modern Japanese paper. The pastedowns the case the interior of the folding structure as well as the exterior have been treated with different very precious Japanese papers. This execution emanates great preciosity in total accord with the paintings it contains. Light traces of pale dampstains and soiling to spine. Small worming to some paintings. Magnificent ensemble. Like the last fires of a setting sun the late realizations of shunga are distinguished by a particular brilliance a refinement and preciosity never equaled. Although they continue to respect the framework and traditional codes of shunga these paintings exacerbate the play of fabrics poses faces the pictorial realization seeming to prevail over the illustrated theme particularly in Shuntei's works in which the bodies seem to float in space those of Eisen all possessing rich decoration. Besides these changes operated in pictorial treatment one observes a change in the role attributed to woman a more present participative even primary and incitative role. hardcover

146285Stanford: Stanford University Press 2002. First edition of this inspirational and thought-provoking family history from the library of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Octavo original red cloth frontispiece portrait of William B. Gould in his veteran's hat illustrated with black and white photographs charts and maps. Association copy inscribed by the author on the half-title page to associate justice of the Supreme Court Ruth Bader Ginsburg "11/4/02 For Ruth With deep appreciation for your fine work in Washington - this work began to gather steam when we were together at Harvard 30 years ago - Best wishes Bill Gould." American lawyer and jurist Ruth Bader Ginsburg served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death in 2020 and was responsible for some of the most eventful legal decisions of the past half-century. Nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1993 to replace retiring justice Byron White Ginsburg became the first Jewish woman and the second woman to serve on the Court after Sandra Day O’Connor. Ginsburg spent much of her legal career as an advocate for gender equality and women’s rights winning many arguments before the Supreme Court. During her tenure as associate justice of the Supreme Court Ginsburg received attention for her fiery and passionate dissents that reflected liberal views of the law. She was popularly dubbed “the Notorious R.B.G.†a moniker she later embraced. She authored several important majority opinions related to gender discrimination voting rights and affirmative action in cases such as United States v. Virginia 1996 which struck down the Virginia Military Institute’s male-only admissions policy as violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment Olmstead v. L.C. 1999 in which the Court ruled that mental illness is a form of disability covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Friends of the Earth Inc. v. Laidlaw Environmental Services Inc. 2000 in which the Court held that residents have standing to seek fines for an industrial polluter that affected their interests and that is able to continue doing so. Gould became acquainted with Ginsburg upon visiting at Harvard in 1971 and '72 after which Gould has said: "We kept in touch over the years when she was on the DC Circuit and the High Court. We exchanged correspondence and reprints over the years.
