188232820516
5 x 8 1/2 in . 4pp. Very good.

This is the rare original announcement and program for a major early benefit concert supporting Jewish refugees from Russia. The pogroms carried out in 1881-82 drove countless Russian Jews to the West. This era marks the beginning of the period of the greatest Jewish immigration to the United States.

The concert was held at Mechanics Hall in Boston in 1882. The featured conductors are Carl Zerrahn and George Henschel. Henschel had become the first conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra a year earlier. Here he leverages his position to support Jewish refugees.

"Beginning in the 1880s a much larger wave of Jewish immigrants arrived in Boston from the Pale of Settlement in Russia and Eastern Europe. During the nineteenth century the Russian czars had confined Jews to this region and subjected them to religious persecution expulsions and forced military conscription. Passage of the May Laws in the 1880s made matters worse by forbidding Jews from owning or renting land outside of towns or cities and limiting their access to education. From 1881-1883 and again in the early twentieth century Jews were also targeted in violent riots or "pogroms" that left thousand dead and caused many more to flee" Boston College 2018.

The concert program includes pieces by Jewish composers or with Jewish themes including selections from from Mendelssohn's Elijah Handel's Samson and Henschel's "There was an Ancient King" sung by Henschel himself the finest baritone of his day. The performance concludes with Handel's "Hallelujah" chorus performed by the Salem Oratorio Society and the Lynn Choral Union.

The conductor featured in this program Sir Isidor George Henschel 1850-1934 was a German-born Jewish baritone pianist conductor and composer. He became the first conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1881. On his appointment he sent his ideas for an innovative seating chart to his close friend Johannes Brahms who replied in an approving letter of mid-November 1881.

Very rare. Freundschaftliche Korrespondenz mit (Hans) Wolfgang Ploderer (1915-2004) u. a.

146874N.p.: N.p. 1970. Archive of 288 vernacular color photographs of country music acts from the 1970s housed in a contemporary photo album with the subject of nearly every photograph identified by manuscript ink captions. Occasional additional notations give a date range between 1972-1980 for the photographs with most being dated 1977-1979.

The photographs primarily consist of performers on stage indicating the photographer was near the stage with a strong sense of composition and timing. Photographs of performers casually posing for the camera indicate the photographer likely had backstage access for some of the performances.

Based on additional information in some of the handwritten captions the photographs were primarily taken at concerts or events in the Western New York region - Chautauqua Dunkirk Little Valley and Lakewood - all within an hour of each other as well as the nearby Erie County NY Fair and Expo and Pittsfield PA. Other locations include the New York State Fair and Pittsburgh PA.

Included are images of country music legends Johnny Cash Dolly Parton Loretta Lynn Conway Twitty Hank Snow June Carter Cash The Carter Family Minnie Pearl Tanya Tucker Tammy Wynette and Wanda Jackson. Also included are photographs of singers who while lesser known today were among the biggest stars of the era including Bobby Goldsboro Crystal Gayle Donna Fargo Freddy Fender Jeannie C. Riley Buddy Alan Charlie Walker Peggy Sue Bill Anderson Kenny Price LeRoy Van Dyke Lynn Anderson Jay Lee Webb Jean Shepard and Kitty Wells. Finally the album contains images of smaller and possibly even regional acts some of which appear unknown to us presenting a broad survey of a transitional era in country music as rock soul and pop began to fuse with the more traditional country sound that had begun declining in popularity toward the end of the previous decade.

For more details please inquire.

Photographs variously sized primarily 3.5 x 5 inches but up to 7.5 x 9.75 inches. Generally Near Fine.

Housed in an about Very Good generic photo album with starting and loss to the spine fraying and rubbing. Several internal pages loose or with dried glue leading to occasional slipping of the photographs. N.p. unknown

1776ST12954Paris: Joseph-Gérard Barbou 1776. 215 x 135 mm. 8 1/2 x 5 1/4". Three volumes.
ELEGANT 19TH CENTURY BROWN MOROCCO GILT BY JOLY FILS stamp-signed on front turn-ins covers with French fillet border raised bands spine compartments densely gilt with complex fleurons drawer handle tools and circlets intricately gilt turn-ins marbled endpapers gilt edges. Engraved title pages three engraved vignettes and three engraved plates after Moreau le jeune. Cohen-de Ricci p. 604. Lightly washed and pressed in keeping with bibliophilic fashion at the time of binding one title page with small corner tear otherwise A FINE SET clean and still crisp internally with ample margins and the scarcely-worn bindings quite lustrous.

This is a finely bound copy of singer and playwright Pierre Laujon's songs "About Society" and "About Folly" with illustrations of "ravishing grace" that Cohen-de Ricci considers among the best efforts of Jean Michel Moreau. Laujon 1727-1811 wrote and performed in musical reviews and ballets where his efforts attracted the attention of the Count of Clermont and the Prince de Condé who hired him to direct their festivals and pageants. The songs here were composed for these "society festivals" gently mocking the frivolous naughty behavior of the elite. The accompanying illustrations showing beautifully dressed courtiers and bon-vivants are the work of Moreau le jeune 1741-1814 deemed by no less than Gordon Ray to be "the greatest name among French illustrators of the 18th century." The graceful bindings here were done by one of the great bookbinding houses of France. After apprenticing in the provinces Antoine Joly 1838-1917 moved to Paris found employment with the celebrated Léon Gruel later formed a partnership with Thibaron in 1874 succeeded him 11 years later and in 1892 turned the business over to his son Robert 1870-1924 who signed his work "Joly fils." According to Duncan & DeBartha "An excellent gilder like his father Robert designed and produced a range of classical covers." The trifecta of light-hearted songs elegant engravings and luxurious bindings endow this set with a great deal of French charm. Joseph-Gérard Barbou] unknown
