1500ST20810RParis ca. 1500. 163 x 115 mm. 6 1/2 x 4 1/2". Single column 18 lines in a gothic book hand.
Rubrics in red line fillers in blue and pink with gold bezant six one-line initials in burnished gold on pink and blue ground two two-line initials in blue on gold ground with a flower in the center one three-line initial in blue filled with ivy on gold ground verso with panel border of colorful flowers and acanthus recto with A LARGE ARCH-TOPPED MINIATURE OF THE CORONATION OF THE VIRGIN with an "L" shaped frame of burnished gold and painted flowers and A FULL BORDER of acanthus flowers a man playing a bagpipe and a hybrid creature wearing a hat all on a painted gold ground. Very minor wrinkling to vellum but the leaf IN LOVELY CONDITION with the gold everywhere gleaming brightly.

From a luxuriously appointed Book of Hours this leaf features a handsome miniature of the Coronation of the Virgin attributed to the workshop of Jean Pichore fl. ca. 1502-20 a major figure among illuminators of the period and one of the most sought-after artists in France at the turn of the 16th century. Executed with imagination and delicacy the miniature features the traditional subject associated with the hour of Compline showing the Virgin being crowned Queen of Heaven following her Death and Assumption. The composition here is quite intimate with the Virgin kneeling before her son as she accepts with humility the crown he lays upon her head. Christ is depicted barefoot and slightly bowed toward his mother in a gentle display of respect. The artist creates a wonderful backdrop for this scene composed entirely of seraphim painted gold blue light pink and green closely packed together. Two of the seraphim hold up light pink draperies behind the central figures as if to shield this tender moment from prying eyes. The borders here are a source of delight featuring a figure wearing a jester-like cap and playing the bagpipe as well as a creature with the body of a bird and the face of a human donning a rather fashionable bycocket cap. The illumination here is of high quality features a liberal use of gold and contains unique marginal details suggesting that the original manuscript must have been a costly commission for a wealthy patron. unknown

'The Duke and Duchess of York 1927. Like the Prince of Wales the next Royal visitors travelled on HMS Renown. This time it was the second son of King George V and Queen Mary Prince Albert Frederick Arthur George 1895–1952 Duke of York. The Duke and Duchess of York left England on 6 January 1927 and arrived at Auckland on 22 February. After two days of deep-sea fishing in the Bay of Islands they returned to Auckland to go by rail and motorcar to Rotorua where the First World War memorial to the Arawas was unveiled. On the way south to Wellington they visited most of the larger North Island towns with a second rest period when the Royal couple and only a minimum of staff spent two days in trout fishing from a camp at Kowhai Flat Tokaanu. At Wellington the Duchess opened the new Karitane Home which she was to revisit 30 years later on her second tour. Meanwhile the Duke paid an unscheduled visit to workers' homes in the Hutt Valley and was shown over woollen mills. He showed great interest in factories several of which he inspected in New Zealand. Following a four-day stay at Wellington the Duke and Duchess boarded Renown for Picton whence they drove to Nelson. It was here that the Duchess was taken ill with tonsilitis and forced to abandon the remainder of her New Zealand itinerary. The Duke went on alone travelling by road and rail to the West Coast and Christchurch where he received the freedom of the city. He also had an excursion further afield and visited the southern lakes. The Dunedin programme included the unveiling of the war memorial and the opening of the Sargood now Dunedin Art Gallery. The Duke then proceeded to Invercargill and Bluff where he joined the Duchess on Renown departing for Australia on 22 March. Weather conditions were so bad that the transfer to the visiting battleship had to be made by tug and not through HMS Diomede as planned. On the abdication of Edward VIII in 1936 the Duke and Duchess came to the throne as George VI and Queen Elizabeth.' They were published anonymously and Taylor wrote to the Grimms that his translations were for 'the amusement of some young friends'. The book was an immediate success and did much to make Grimm's stories acceptable as reading material for children thanks to Taylor's omissions and alterations to the more gruesome episodes in the original German. The stories to this work include 'Hans in Luck' 'The Travelling Musicians' 'Snow Drop' 'The Lady and the Lion' 'Rumpelstiltskin' and 'The Golden Goose'.Volume I lacks half title but volume II retains half title. With publisher's advertisements to the rear of volume II but lacking to volume I.With the bookplate of Richard Barrington and the inscription of Angela Shoosmith to the front pastedown of volume I.Of the illustrations by Cruikshank John Ruskin declared "the etchings are the finest things next to Rembrandt's that as far as I know have been done since etching was invented." The failure of this experiment was a serious blow to classical scientific theories because it cast doubts on the existance of the universal ether which had been a basic principleof for example the Newtonian theories of the universe. Vide PMM: 378 401 408.The paper appeared first in the "American Journal of Science" in November as offered here and was published a month later in "Philosophical Magazine" in a slightly modified form."Michelson trained at the U.S. Naval Academy and Morley minister turned chemist began a series of experiments to determine the relation of ether drift and the velocity of light effects of extremely minute values. They used a slightly silvered glass set angular to a ray of sunlight so that a part ofthe ray was transmitted a part reflected out and again returned thereby providing two paths one perpendicular to the other. If drift existed the superimposed rays would produce interference. None was observed showing that the earth's motion did not affect the light's speed. The negative result held revolutionary implications which led directly thru Lorentz and Einstein to the acceptance of new standards of reference of time and space from geometry and cosmometry."DibnerIn 1919 Einstein met Michelson in California. At a dinner given in honor of them both Einstein said in a speech "You Michelson uncovered an insidious defect in the ether theory of light as it existed and stimulated the ideas of H.A. Lorentz and Fitzgerald out of which the Special Theory of Relativity developed. Without your work this theory would today be scarcely more than an interesting speculation." In an interview in 1842 Einstein said: "It is no doubt that Michelson's experiment was of considerably influence upon my work insofar as it strengthened my conviction concerning the validity of the Principle of relativity. On the other side I was pretty much convinced of the validity of the principle before I did know this experiment and its result. In any case Michelson's experiment removed practically any doubt about the validity of the principle in optics and showed that a profound change of the basic concepts of physics was inevitable."Michelson was awarded the 1907 Nobel Prize "for his optical precision instrument the inteferometer and the spectroscopic and metrological investigations he has carried on."Dibner: Heralds of Science: 161 lising the later version from "Philosophical Magazine" - Norman 1505.- Magee "A Source Book in Physics" pp. 369 ff. the later paper. The volume contains another paper by Michelson and Morley "On a method of Making the Wave-lenght of Sodium Light the actual and practical Standard of Lenght" pp. 427-430. unknown

Folding-book manuscripts (Parabaiks in Burmese) are a type of writing material historically used in Mainland Southeast Asia, particularly in the areas of present-day Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. The manuscripts are made of thick paper, usually of the Siamese rough bush (Khoi in Thai and Lao) tree or the paper mulberry, glued into a very long sheet and folded in a concertina fashion, with the front and back lacquered to form protective covers or attached to decorative wood covers. The unbound books are made in either white or black varieties, with the paper being undyed in the former and blackened with soot or lacquer in the latter. Along with paper made from bamboo and palm leaves, parabaik were the main medium for writing and drawing in early modern Burma/Myanmar.
