The only other Vietnamese copy of the Classic of Changes in WorldCat is a different edition held at Leiden University accession no. 695525306.

"The Yijing was probably introduced into Vietnam at about the same time as it reached Korea and Japan but it did not become influential until the establishment of the Lê dynasty 1428-1789. During that period Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism became state orthodoxy and the Changes was studied both as a Confucian classic at the Imperial College and as a divination manual at the Ministry of Rites."-Richard J. Smith The I Ching: A Biography 2012 pp. 151-52.

"Yijing scholarship in Vietnam was highly pragmatic. Vietnamese scholars were not interested in metaphysical discussions or textual criticism. To most Vietnamese the Yijing was a book of high practical value. The Yijing was basically treated as a textbook for the civil service examinations. The Vietnamese government reprinted Zhu Xi and Cheng Yi's commentaries on the Yijing numerous times to promote Confucian education and morality.

"Traditional Vietnam also applied Yijing-related principles to things and affairs in their daily life. Though not a popular and influential text in the Vietnamese Confucian circle the Yijing and its yinyang wuxing two primal forces and five basic agents doctrine penetrated the ideas and practices of Vietnamese politics medicine agriculture calendrical studies geography religion and folklore. The yinyang wuxing doctrine shaped the Vietnamese perception of their society politics human relationship and the outside world. The imperial family and the courtiers applied the principle of wuxing in naming. Vietnamese scholars used the Yijing to advocate the 'six-eight poetry.' Some Vietnamese officials claimed authority from the divination of the Yijing. Geomancy or fengshui based on the yinyang wuxing doctrine was prevalent in Vietnamese thought and folklore."-Wai-Ming Ng "Yijing Scholarship in Late Nguyá»…n Vietnam" Review of Vietnamese Studies 3 No. 1 2003 p. 5.

Our copy of the Classic of Changes appears to be identical to the digitized copy held at the National Library of Vietnam HVv.1/1-4 which has been described as a Vietnamese reprint of a Yongle-era 1403-25 Chinese edition. It is a succinct presentation of the Classic of Changes with essential prefatory and in-line commentaries by Neo-Confucian scholars including a series of cosmological diagrams in the first volume. As Richard Smith notes above Yijing editions such as ours have been published in Vietnam since the Lê dynasty and the absence of publication information - either of the Chinese edition or the Vietnamese reprint - makes our copy difficult to date. The presence of handwritten marginalia in sinographs nevertheless makes clear that our copy has been carefully studied by at least one Vietnamese student of the classic presumably before the abolishment of the civil examination system in 1919.

Overall very good condition with light and mostly marginal staining and worming. The endpapers are recycled paper with printed and handwritten texts. Edges are painted red and some are split along the fore-edge which does not affect reading. Annotated by hand throughout in red ink with additional and later page numbers in Arabic numerals and glosses in the Vietnamese Latin alphabet.

⧠Yuenan Hannan wenxian ziliaoku 越å—漢喃文ç»è³‡æ–™åº« Academia Sinica. unknown

17617561Lyon: Chez Pierre Bruyset - Ponthus 1761. Full Leather. Very Good. President George Washington's copy with his bookplate which was restruck before 1863 from the original copper plate. "The inventory of Washington's books made at the time of his death.shows that his library then numbered about nine hundred volumes. These under his will became the property of his nephew Judge Bushrod Washington who also inherited his papers and the Mansion House of Mount Vernon. Here Judge Washington lived and added to General Washington's library a part at least of his own books. In his will in 1826 he provided as follows: 'All the papers and letter books devised to me by my uncle Gen'l Washington as well as the books in my study other than law books I give to my nephew Geo. C. Washington; the books in the cases in the dining-room I give to my nephew John A. Washington.' In the inventory of his estate are these items: In the dining-room 468 vols. miscellaneous works left to John A. Washington 658 vols. of miscellaneous works left to Geo. C. Washington 1125 N. of miscel. Pamphlets left Geo. C. Washington beside 169 vols. of State papers 22 vols. of Journals of Congress and 649 vols. of Law Books 22 law pamphlets. These latter were destined for Bushrod Washington Herbert the son of a niece in case he should be trained for the law. Mount Vernon was next occupied by John A. Washington. The books left to George C. Washington remained there for many years but in 1847 or 1848 a considerable portion of them perhaps all that remained were sold to Henry Stevens the bookseller. Mr. Stevens announced his intention of sending them over to the British Museum. To prevent this and to secure them for Boston a number of Boston and Cambridge men particularly Prof. Jared Sparks Prof. Andrews Norton Mr. George Livermore and Mr. Charles Eliot Norton.raised $3800 to purchase them from Stevens. This amount and $450 beside was collected the Athenaeum itself contributing $500; and at a meeting of the subscribers it was voted to place the books permanently in the Boston Athenaeum. The remainder of Washington's library has been scattered and no large number of his books now exists in any one place beside the Boston Athenaeum. What became of the rest of the books left to George C. Washington can only be conjectured. Those given to John A. Washington passed to his son John A. Washington and then to his son Lawrence Washington of Alexandria Va.other sales have given an opportunity to book collectors to bid for books which once belonged to Washington. The titles of the Catalogues of these sales will be found on pp. 470-475 of this volume. A sale of books claiming to be from Washington's library but having spurious book-plates took place in Washington in 1863." The present title is one of those. So the "spurious" bookplate was struck by the Washington family from the original copper plate and placed into some of the books in the collection - so to call it "spurious" is a misnomer. The collection of General Washington in the Boston Athenaeum contains 13 volumes with this bookplate - they were purchased in Washington in 1863 see page 565 of "A Catalogue of the Washington Collection in the Boston Athenaeum". 12mo 775 pages. Contemporary calf marbled end papers red leather lettering piece on spine; all edges stained red. Internally very good; binding shows considerable wear. 19450009118DIJON FRANCE FR. Very Good. 1945. On offer is the 1945 Come-Back Diary of the 602 Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion detailing the few months of the battalions involvement in World War II. The document is an incredibly unique and interesting piece of World War II memorabilia. As well each and every newsletter in the collection was written or compiled by Sidney Bernstein one of the most famous music promoters of the 1960s and the man who booked the Beatles among many other in their first tour of America and helped jump start the British Invasion in the mid-1960s. The Come-Back Diary contains within it all the volumes of the 602nd AAA Gun Battalion daily newsletter published between April 1945 and October 1945. Bernstein and the 602 AAA Gun Battalion are stationed in Dijon France for the entirety of the newsletters production The first issue of the first volume April 11 1945 has the headline Your 3 Minutes Gazette Goes To Press!! and feature short paragraphs under the titles Feature Story Music Dept. Your Daily Comic Strip Gossip Column Editorial War News and Tonites Movie. Other sections featured throughout the seven month run include Afterthoughts Religious Services Notes from a G.I.s notebook Letter of the Day Sports Personalities Predictions Sinatra what is the strange phenomena called Frank Sinatra and many many more. As the issues progress the newsletter takes on a more conversational tone dealing less with the events coming up than with the general feelings and daily life in Dijon in the waning months of the War as well as including more personal thoughts from Bernstein himself. For example: Vol. 2 No. 13 June 26 1945. Brother is hot.He cusses and cusses and cusses - The Sun-baked tents - the dirty sons of the Rising Sun - the Sun itself.but then he remembers - an intensely cold winter night on guard in Germany - reports on the hot loop Nazi paratroopers dropping all around - his fingers almost froze to his M1 that long long night and how he prayed that hed see the sun once more. The guys stops cursing.peels off his OD shirt and strips to the waist leaves his tent for a slug of water.smiles at the sun.and goes to work on the Tuesday edition. In total the newspaper is filled with items and tidbits from back home in the U.S. entertainment and lifestyle information for the serviceman of the Six-Oh-Second. Bernstein is a very competent and very enjoyable writer throughout and does an exceptional job of conveying emotion wit and the experience of daily life as a soldier in the Dijon. Days of heightened emotion such as FDRs death Hitlers death VE day VJ day the opening of Bernsteins GI Nite Club and many others in the last year of the war are especially interesting. Bernstein is an incredibly adept and interesting writer and these days show off his talent especially well. The newsletters continue until September 24 1945. There is one later newsletter included in the collection from October 13th. This is on the first page of the compilation and does an excellent job of setting the scene of the post WW2 landscape as well as Bernsteins feelings of writing the newsletter during the war. It is one of the most interesting newsletters in the collection account for roughly 85 pages. Each page seemed to be set and printed by Sidney Bernstein himself. The pages are in good shape showing occasional rips and tears but very little other than that. Some pages have smudging of the ink but nothing to affect the legibility of the content. The cover is a simple brown paper. It seems the front cover used to say 602 AAA COMEBACK DIARY with a drawing of what looks to be the Statue of Liberty however the drawing and letters have faded almost completely and are very difficult to make out. There is no spine and the book is bound by thread. This would make an absolutely amazing document of World War II history as it presents a nuanced and comprehensive picture of the life of servicemen in Dijon as the War came to end. As well this would be great for anyone interested in the incredible life of Sid Bernstein before he helped change the world of music forever. Sample Text: April 12 - EDITORIAL - The President of the United States of America our Commander in Chief passed away last night. The present work consists in 100 questions the answers to which constitute the purpose of the Royal Danish Arabia Expedition. In fact the present work is the handbook of Niebuhr's travel to Arabia Felix as its author is the spiritual father of it. The work is extraordinary in many ways and it not only served as the basis for the Arabia-expedition it also constitutes a forerunner of modern bible science that would begin to emerge a few decades later. Johann Davis Michaelis 1717-19 was a theologian and orientalist whose fame today rests upon the present work and upon the fact that he was responsible for the first scientific expedition to Arabia Felix namely that of Niebuhr. In 1753 he had come up with the idea for the the Royal Danish Arabia Expedition 1761-1767 and had gotten the Danish minister Bernstoff to agree to it. In 1760 when the expedition was becoming a reality Michaelis recommended Niebuhr as a participant and he outlined the entire purpose of the trip - namaly the list of 100 questions that he prepared and published for the members of the expedition in order for them to answer in the course of the voyage. For all intents and purposes Michaelis was the spiritual father of the Arabia-expedition. As a theologian and an orientalist many of Michaelis' questions have root in the Bible. But unlike many other theolgians of the time Michaelis sought to shed light over biblical themes through sources outside of the Bible - especially from the Middle East not least Arabia. In this regard his 100 Questions also came to be a precursor to the emergence of modern bible science.Although the expedition would have never taken place had it not been for Michaelis and his 100 questions - many of which are also purely naturalistic - he could not quite have foreseen the scientific outcome of the expedition. He had not foreseen that Niebuhr would become the founder of the scientific description of the Arabian peninsula and that Niebuhr's notes would become the basis for the first decipherment of Mesopotamian and Persian cuneiform. On the contrary he was probably quite disappointed that his questions were not all answered as thoroughly as the had anticipated. Adding to that Niebuhr's answer to the questions "only" takes up six pages in the preface to "Description of Arabia" although the text itself contains many detailed explanations and answers to Michaelis' questions. hardcover
1755ABC_474521755. Manuscript of 24 pages 6 printed maps on cardboard. This wonderful logbook details the journey of a French captain from Manila to the Maluku Islands in todays Indonesia. The journey took place during the months of March to May of 1755. The captain of the ship recounted with great detail the events of every day of the journey with detailed daily accounts of the weather winds manoeuvres of the ship its departures anchorages and precise coordinates at every point of the journey. The captain furthermore had a keen eye for the geographical and nautical details along the journey. He recounted the exact locations of for example sandbanks and bays where ships and their crews can take provisions and fresh water. The accounts are detailed and captivating: "After our boats were back on board we set sail . in the afternoon to moor under the old Portuguese fort on the Solor island Indonesia the winds for the tide were fresh at 1:34 a.m. . sand and gravel and then I went back to mooring. The pavilion of the fort . the village is under the said fort at 3 cables from us .". The captain goes on to describe the geographical features of the islands as well as other places en route with great detail. Curiously we find inscriptions in Spanish and the names of one don Phelipe Qui who describes himself as el piloto and one Padre Don Estevan de Melo. The latter might be identical with Don Estevan Roxas y Melo a native of Lima Peru and secretary to the Archbishop of Manila Rodriguez since 1736. Roxas y Melo was part of the 1751 reconstruction of the Cathedral of Manila working under the auspice of the Italian architect Juan de Uguccioni. The logbook comes with six printed maps partly illustrating the journey of the captain pasted on contemporary cardboard. They depict the Bay of Sulavesi with the city of Bantang Pitcairn the coast of New Guinea the coast of Queensland the Santa Cruz Islands in the present-day Solomon Islands and Alejandro Selkirk Island. The plates stem from the French translation of James Hawkesworths An Account of the Voyages Hawkesworth Relation des voyages entrepris par ordre de sa Majesté Britannique actuellement regnante; pour faire des découvertes dans l'hemisphère meridional Paris 1774.Some holes on the first sheet not affecting the text. Small water damage some slighlty affecting the text. Remnants of seals on last page. Otherwise in good condition. unknown

Reynard the Fox 'hero of several medieval European cycles of versified animal tales that satirize contemporary human society. Though Reynard is sly amoral cowardly and self- seeking he is still a sympathetic hero whose cunning is a necessity for survival. He symbolizes the triumph of craft over brute strength usually personified by Isengrim the greedy and dull-witted wolf. The main literary tradition of Reynard the Fox descends from the extant French 'branches' of the Roman de Renart about 30 in number nearly 40000 lines of verse. The facetious portrayal of rustic life the camel as a papal legate speaking broken French the animals riding on horses and recounting elaborate dreams all suggest the atmosphere of 13th-century France' Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature. SCARCE FIRST EDITION IN A WONDERFUL BINDING BY BAYNTUN OF BATH. Kingsley's WATER BABIES was extremely popular and remained a mainstay of English children's literature for many decades. Kingsley wrote the work as part satire in support for Darwin's 'Origin of Species' which Kingsley had been one of the earliest public figures to praise. Within the tale Kingsley alludes to debates among biologists of its day satirizing and at various times referring to Sir Roderick Murchison Professor Richard Owen Professor Thomas Henry Huxley and of course "Mr. Darwin" They and the science of the period become explicitly part of the story.
The story is also thematically concerned with Christian redemption and Kingsley also used the book to argue that England treated its poor badly and to question child labour. Unfortunate common prejudices of its day particularly in reference to Americans Jews blacks Catholics and the Irish have led to the story's fall from popularity. Macmillan and Company hardcover
